Abstract

In lateral maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA), barrier membrane coverage over the bony access window is a routine practice. Many studies on MSA have demonstrated histologic and radiographic healing of the augmented bone in the sinus, but healing of the bony window has rarely been reported. In the present case series, surgical re-entry was performed to the window areas of previous MSA in 16 patients, who were followed-up for 5?27 years. All sites presented clinical and radiographic corticalization. At seven sites, remnants of bone substitute particles were observed. At five sites, the bone contour had bulged because of bone graft material displacement. Within the limitations of the present case series, ossification of the bony access window may be obtained without barrier membrane coverage
